The Merry Fiddlers Certificated Site

This medieval church, with parts dating from the 1100s, stands next to the grounds of Stansted Hall. The setting is peaceful despite the convenience of the nearby motorway and airport. It contains two exceptional seventeenth-century tomb figures, those of wasp-waisted Hester Salusbury in her hunting clothes and her father Sir Thomas Middleton.

Sparrows Campsite has 6 luxury Bell tents available in the main wildflower meadow, each one named after the different variety of trees that are found in the woodlands surrounding the campsite.


The tents are set in their own private “settlement” in the meadow surrounded by a woven fence barrier to making it feel like you’re in your own wild off-grid camp! You’ll find everything you need for your stay within your settlement, but the emphasis is on keeping it simple at the same time. Each area has a campfire at the heart of the settlement with seating as well as an outdoor dining area too. 

The Bell tents are fully furnished with beds, mattresses and bedding, all you'll need to bring is a towel.

The settlements are close to the campsite's shower and toilet facilities, so if nature calls you don't have to walk half a mile to get to them in the middle of the night!

Luxury Bell Tent


Sparrows campsite also offers the option of wild camping in a number of beautiful areas around the campsite. There are 5 pitches available and all are set in their own private area with a campfire and picnic table. So if you have your own tent or campervan all you have to do is book a pitch and turn up! 


You will have access to the hot showers and the rest of the campsite facilities which are only a short walk from the wild camping area. 

Wild Camping

Sparrows Campsite offers a selection of fully furnished Bell tents set in their own privately-fenced areas in the campsites wildflower meadow.

Each Bell tent is fully furnished with beds, bedding and linens, all you have to bring is a towel! Perfect for anyone that wants to escape into nature whilst enjoying all the usual home comforts. 

The campsite also offers a number of pitch-and-pay wild camping areas. If you have your own tent and camping equipment then all you have to do is book your pitch.

Inside, the church is light and spacious. There is a 500-year-old timber door that still swings on its ancient hinges – even though it now leads to a blocked north doorway! Another quirky feature is the nineteenth-century vestry – its walls are lined from top to bottom with thousands of cockle shells – the emblem of St James. The monuments in the church walls and floor are a fascinating record of those who once lived here.

St James' Church

For anyone with a love of Charles Dickens this church is an unmissable experience. The churchyard of St James was his inspiration for the opening chapter of Great Expectations, where our hero Pip meets Magwitch. Here, you can find ‘Pip’s Graves’ – the forlorn gravestones of 13 babies that Charles Dickens describes as “little stone lozenges”. The site is dramatic – on the Hoo Peninsula with marshes stretching north to the Thames estuary. Settle down in the church with a pork pie and some brandy or visit Rochester during the Dickens Festival, held each year in June.

With a hot tub positioned in front of the cabin, overlooking the lake, there is really no reason to leave the property during your stay. However, if you fancy some exercise there are some beautiful walks in the neighbouring ancient woodland, a 10 minute walk from the cabin.

Hylands House and Park has plenty for the family to savor, with 574 acres of parkland, including recreational woodland that is ancient grassland, lakes, ponds and gardens. Addititionally there is a beautifully restored nation household to explore and a fairly play ground that is awesomeThe house, dating from 1730, has some spectacular rooms to wonder at, including the exquisitely gilded Drawing Room to your sumptuously ornate Banqueting Room. There was an impressive Grand Staircase to climb to your Repton Room on to the floor that is very first which gives stunning views throughout the landscaped parkland.Next door could be the Social History Room providing a variety of displays to analyze. There is a basement filled with butler's wine and pantry cellar to explore too!
