Discovery Surf School in Bigbury-on-Sea is a family run business that is dedicated to providing top quality surf and SUP coaching. We take pride in delivering our lessons in an environment that is safe, fun and suitable for all ages and abilities. Discovery is regarded as one of the top centres in the UK and our emphasis is on giving the customer the best experience possible.

Lesson info

Format: Each of our surf lessons will begin with a 15(ish) minute safety and technique lesson on the beach. This time is included in the overall lesson duration. Once the basics have been nailed on the sand, it's time to hit the water!

Age: In all group lessons, participants must be at least 6 years old, and able to confidently swim 50m.

Ratios: All of our group lessons run with a maximum ratio of 6 pupils per instructor. School group ratios are slightly larger at 8:1 maximum.

You can also purchase a lesson as a gift voucher.

Family surf lesson 4 pupils or more

Age: 6+

Duration: 1, 1.5 or 2 hours

Price For 4 pupils:

£100 (1 hour, extras £25pp), £120 (1.5 hours, extras £30pp) or £144 (2 hours, extras £36pp)

Stand up paddle boarding

Learn to SUP with the UK's first surf school to offer paddleboarding lessons.

Format: Each of our surf lessons will begin with a 15(ish) minute safety and technique lesson on the beach. This time is included in the overall lesson duration. Once the basics like controlling the board, standing up and getting in safely have been nailed on the sand, it's time to hit the water!

Age: In all SUP lessons, participants must be at least 12 years old, and able to confidently swim 50m as the equipment is quite big so harder to control if you are smaller.

Ratios: All of our private SUP lessons run with a maximum ratio of 6 pupils per instructor. School group ratios are slightly larger at 8:1 maximum.

Kayak hire

Discovery Surf School's shops at Bigbury on-Sea and Challaborough Bay both have single and double kayaks for Hire. Unfortunately we do not offer kayak tours or lessons, but it's pretty easy to pick up and safe to do as long as the conditions are calm. The coastline around the bay is perfect for exploring on a kayak and it's a great way to get out on the water with your family.

The area in between the island and the beach is really sheltered from swell and wind so we recommend that you kayak here. Only on really calm days can you paddle around the island.

When hiring out equipment, we ask that you leave a deposit with us (preferably a form of photo ID like a driving licence) so we can keep track of your hire.

Your own kayak adventure Grab a picnic and head out. We provide buoyancy aids included in the price and you can hire wetsuits if you need to, but on hot, sunny days clothes or swimmers are just fine.

Private SUP lessons As with the surf lessons, you will begin by learning the basics on the beach, then take to the water. All SUP lessons are private, so you can benefit from a more personalised experience.

Discovery Surf Hire

We've got all the gear you need to hire to get in the water whether you've surfed lots before, or just once or twice.

If you book one of our private surf lessons, you can benefit from free surf hire for the rest of the day (subject to availability) meaning you can keep hold of your surfboard and wetsuit to get a few more practice hours under your belt.

When hiring out equipment, we ask that you leave a deposit with us (preferably a form of photo ID like a driving licence) so we can keep track of your hire.

SUP hire

As well as providing lessons in stand up paddle boarding, we also have the equipment for you to hire (subject to weather/surf conditions).

For children, 8 or 9 foot soft surfboards can be used as SUPs (we will provide buoyancy aids). This will be for the price of surfboard hire.
