A back-to-basics, off-the-grid sort of campsite, Fearon Place is utterly remote and has spectacular views across the Cumbrian fells. The Ehen river borders the wild camping field, and in no time at all you can be strolling around Ennerdale Water or scaling Grisedale Pike.
It’s also a great overnight stop if you’re going for the long haul on the Coast to Coast Walk and don’t feel like firing up the barbecue (they can be hired on site, and kindling can be purchased too), as there are plenty of welcoming pubs in less than 15 minutes’ walk.
If you do go down the self-catering route, you can pick up basics at the convenience store in Wath Brow village (five minutes’ drive), where you can grab a fish and chip supper too. There are supermarkets and outdoorsy shops for last-minute purchases of walking gear in Keswick (40 minutes).
Please note that Fearon Place does not have running water or showers on site. What it does have is fairly basic, being portaloos and recycling bins. As there’s no electricity, it’s a good idea to pack a torch or two to prevent after-dark accidents.
