Lacock Abbey in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire, England, was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian order. The abbey stayed a nunnery until the suppression of Roman Catholic institutions in England in the 16th century when it was then sold and converted into a residence where William Sharington and his family lived.
During the English Civil War Lacock Abbey was fortified and remained loyal to the crown but surrendered to the Parliamentary forces after Devizes had fallen in 1645.
Lacock Abbey is managed by the National Trust and is a fantastic place to visit with your family. It has been used for many films including most famously Harry Potter. The interiors of Lacock Abbey were used as the interiors of Hogwarts School!
