What is it like staying in a Contemporary Yurt?

The simple answer is just imagine taking all of the best bits of camping and losing all of the not so good bits. A Contemporary Yurt is a bright, spacious circular structure consisting of a wooden frame with a lattice wall, a durable, insulated and waterproof fabric cover and a solid locking door.  Our guests love the viewing dome through which as night falls you can relax looking at the sky.   Although generally classified as a tent, a Contemporary Yurt is far more spacious (even for the tallest person), much stronger and weather tight.

Yurtcamp Devon & Dartmoor | Luxury Glamping Holidays in Devon

It feels like everyone wants to be outdoors and camping at the moment; whether you’ve done it before or new to the notion of sleeping under the stars, an awesome movement is sweeping the country.  Except...not everyone wants to spend their holiday hammering in tent pegs and playing cats cradle with guy ropes.  Well, this is where Yurtcamp Devon swings heroically into action.  They’ve done all the hard work so you don’t have to.  There is still all the simplicity of a nature based getaway, but your home is a contemporary yurt and you sleep on a proper bed.

Situated on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in south Devon, this excellent, family friendly site is set up like a village, with groups of yurts dotted about well kept fields and shrouded in woodland, separated by winding paths, picnic tables and firepits.  There are 22 yurts in all, some small and suitable for two (with room for a travel cot if there is a third wheel in your party) and some larger, which comfortably sleep 5 or 6.  All yurts have proper beds, a woodburner to keep you warm on chiller nights, a table and chairs and cooking facilities.  A well maintained shower and toilet block is located a short walk from the yurts.  If you want a more remote setting for your stay, book a yurt hidden in the woodland, either with one or two neighbours if you travel in a group, or completely on its own in the wilds, perfect for complete seclusion or even….a romantic proposal.  And talking of proposals, if the answer is a delighted yes, then why not consider going the whole hog and marrying at Yurtcamp?  They are a licensed venue for weddings where you can tie the knot in the thatched pavilion and have a catered reception for up to 140 people.

The yurts are surrounded by 40 acres of beautiful woodland and there is plenty of space to explore and walk along one of the many pretty trails; wildlife lovers can keep a lookout out for birds of prey and deer.  There is a large field on the site which has been left clear for ball games and general gadding about.  Yurtcamp also has table tennis, a playground, a sandpit and a woodland assault course with zipwire, so there is plenty to keep everyone very well entertained.  The excellent Woodland Cafe onsite serves meals, Devon cream teas and drinks.  

There is no real reason to leave this lovely set up, but should you decide to venture into the outside world, you’ll be well rewarded.  The Devon coast is only 8 miles down the road and the ancient woodland of Dartmoor National Park is right on the doorstep for hiking, biking and rambling in the wilds.  It is well worth a visit to Becky Falls here, a 70 foot waterfall, which offers a great family day out with walking trails, boulder scrambling and even animal encounters.  For daredevils, the River Dart Country Park is a ten minute drive away and is a chance to have a go at kayaking, high ropes, climbing and loads of other brilliant activities.

If you do take a day trip, make sure you get back to camp in time for some nighttime star gazing.  Each yurt has a viewing dome at the centre, so you can light the woodburner, kick back and watch out for shooting stars across the dark Devon sky.

Situated between the lake and river, you’ll enjoy views of both, drifting off and waking to the sounds of running water. This pitch gets the shade in the morning; great for cool lie-ins on sunny days!

Perched on the ridge, (but sheltered by a tree line,) Barbie overlooks the lake and pine forest. Catches the sun for the longest and latest, and is one of the most private pitches.

Peggy - Standard Bell Tent

Wake up to the sound of running water from the river, in this family sized tent, nestled between the lake, a pond and the river. This pitch sleeps up to 5 and is located at the bottom of the field, next to a large, level grassy area, making it great for kids. It’s also conveniently located right next to car park 3.

Matt - Large Bell Tent

The sloping meadow, with levelled pitches, offers breath-taking views. A stream meanders down the hillside from a small pond at the top, down to a lake at the bottom of the field, connecting to a river in the valley below. A vast wall of trees, and miles of woodland walks in Haldon forest lies beyond!

This secluded site is something of a wildlife haven. With no site lighting, and minimal (solar) lighting at the pitches, it’s perfect for spotting glow worms and bats at night. Here you’ll have access to uninterrupted vistas of trees, a fishing lake and a small river, and miles of woodland forest trails. (Which connect up to a choice of different pubs within 30 mins walk.) Or go for a wander to say hello to the horses living on the farm. 

There are never more than 10 pitches in the 2.5 acre field (even on a busy summer holiday weekend), so there is plenty of space. Bell tents are spaced a minimum of 10 metres apart from one another, for your privacy.

If you have friends/family that would like to join, message us for availability and we’ll aim to arrange you to stay in pitches close to one another.

The tents can squeeze another single bed in too, if you have a 3rd person (at a small extra fee).

DOGS: Dogs are allowed, but the site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

PARKING/ACCESS: We have 3 different car parks. For 4×4 owners and braver drivers, there’s parking very close to pitches. For others, access from the main car park involves a 200-metre walk down a steep track, which can be slippery at times. (Wheelbarrows provided for your gear.)

The tents are self check in, but good signage and a site map should enable you to find your pitch on your own.

Our facilities are basic and designed to be in keeping with the natural environment they are set in and to ensure they have minimal impact on the land. All totally off-grid, no electric hook-ups, no flushing toilets, just mother nature at her best.

Compost loo’s, heated showers and washing facilities are all offered up in rustic wooden huts, cleaned thoroughly, multiple times every day.  Please consider whether you can cope with compost loo’s before you book! Have a look at our photos below to see if it’s for you.

Just down the tidal lane are the beaches of East Portlemouth, where you can catch the passenger ferry across to the sailing town of Salcombe. Within a stones throw is our quaint and award-winning village pub, The Millbrook and the famously eccentric pub, The Pigs Nose Inn. Eat locally caught Salcombe crab, freshly baked Devon pasties and quench your thirst with some local cider … the traditional flavours of the Westcountry.

All outdoor exhibits and the majority of indoor spaces are open, however a small number of animal houses will remain closed due to their size and social distancing guidelines in place.

To refuel during the day, there are various food outlets around the site to grab a takeaway drink or snack, including the Island Restaurant in the heart of the zoo. Situated in the main entrance, the Living World gift shop is stocked full of unique gifts, cuddly toys and branded souvenirs.

Paignton Zoo is a registered charity, so not only do you get a good day out, you know your money is going to a good cause, supporting education, scientific research and practical conservation around the world. Paignton Zoo supports a number of projects in the UK and overseas that aim to conserve wildlife in the wild, as well as playing a key role in breeding programmes for are and endangered species. You can also help by purchasing an Annual Pass, for entry all year round to Paignton Zoo.

Battlefield Live Torbay is a geniune styled combat play experience utilizing cool grade that is armed forces red gaming weapons!  Their custom built 3 acre arena that is outdoor specifically landscaped to present a mixture of challenging game maps and gaming options. Features include elevated vantage points to start fields, plus observation that is underground and abandoned village! Their thoughtfully crafted laser combat areas will give you a taste of genuine armed forces exercises and contemporary warfare rather than the futuristic stuff that is interior. Awesome! You can choose an organization no more than a family group or as much as party of 50, with pay and play options plus birthday parties for kids (nevertheless over 8 though) and now have class that is special getaway too! It should be noted for moms and dads to mention to the small children that while there are lots of real hurdles and features like vehicles and trees, you're not actually allowed to climb on or under some of them. Worth bearing in mind to off save a telling through the marshall!
