In the heart of England lies Peterborough, a city which is home to a superb Norman cathedral, attracting plenty of visitors every year. Founded as a monastic abbey in 654 AD, it became one of the most historically significant medieval abbeys in the country, and the burial places of two Queens. Aside from the Cathedral, it is also worth visiting Peterborough Museum, which is home to a vast array of artefacts and interactive displays including fossils of Jurassic sea creatures, items from the Napoleonic Wars and grisly reminders of the buildings' former use - as a hospital with several operating theatres. For those in need of retail therapy, head to Queensgate, a large shopping centre with a range of shops from high street names to designer brands. You will also find an array of cafes and restaurants here too. If you are happier out in the countryside, take a trip to Ferry Meadows, a large green space with lakes and woodland and plenty of room to walk, cycle and horse ride; there are cafes here too to sit and relax.
