On the north-east coast of Scotland sits Aberdeen, a vibrant city which is, according to The Scotsman (the paper, not an actual Scots Man) "one of the most architecturally distinctive cities in Europe". This is, in part, due to the mile-long Union Street, lined with classic granite buildings, the huge granite Union bridge and towering Marischal College. There is plenty going on in the centre; shops, places to eat and drink and things to see. Local walking tours are a good idea here so you don't miss out.
